Fordzilla is a virtual intern project completed by a team of Ford design interns during the summer of 2020.
Matt Whitby - Experience Designer & Developer
Naheem Browne - Automotive Interior Designer
Sean Hadley - Automotive Exterior Designer
Hunter Elmore - Automotive Exterior Designer
Timeframe: 2 months
Outcome: Functional VR Experience
Using the Unreal game engine as the prototyping tool, each experiment explored a different 3D spatial way of showcasing aspects of the vehicle design process. This video above shows two examples of these prototypes: a rough wireframe of selecting a model to show on a pedestal and a 3D slider to show different types of vehicle packages.
In order to make the experience of viewing a vehicle design concept more engaging, we decided to include a test drive in the final experience. Several rough prototypes were iterated on in order to fine tune and explore what the test drive experience would feel like.
Once the driving mechanism felt and functioned well, the next important part of the experience to test and prototype was the driving track itself. The track needed to feel futuristic and game like while also allowing the user to get a sense of what it would be like to drive that vehicle in a real game.
